Honored with the Sol Katz Award for Geospatial Free and Open Source Software (GFOSS) in recognition of his commitment to GRASS project coordination, Neteler has served as coordinator of the GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) project since 1999. He received his degree in Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology at the University of Hannover, Germany in 1999, where he worked as a researcher and teacher for two years. From 2001–2007, he worked as a researcher at FBK (formerly ITC-irst). From 2005–2007, while preserving his work as an FBK researcher, Neteler also worked in the same capacity for the Centro di Ecologia Alpina of Trento, Italy.
From 2008, he worked at the Fondazione Edmund Mach (FEM) — San Michele All'Adige, Trento, Italy — as coordinator of a research unit in GIS and Remote Sensing. His main interests are in remote sensing for environmental risk assessment and Free Software GIS development, especially GRASS. Neteler is co-author of two books on the use of free software GRASS and several scientific papers on GIS.
