Winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Barré-Sinoussi shared the award with her former mentor Luc Montagnier for their discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Her fundamental work in identifying HIV as the cause of AIDS stands as one of the most consequential contributions in modern virology.

A French virologist, Barré-Sinoussi served as Director of the Regulation of Retroviral Infections Division and as a Professor at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. She retired from active research in 2015 and fully retired by 2017.
