David Hemmendinger was a co-editor of the fourth edition of the Encyclopedia of Computer Science, a project that rekindled his interest in the history of science and technology. He teaches a course on the history of computing (Babylonian tablets to tablet PCs) as well as courses on programming languages, computer architecture, parallel computing, and algorithms. He is currently writing a paper on an analog computer used in the dyeing industry and another on the development of real-time programming techniques. Before getting into computer science in the early 1980s, he worked on the history and philosophy of science.
