Developer of some of the early visual information retrieval systems, Jain is also the founder of IEEE Multimedia and the company Virage. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Nagpur University, Nagpur, India and holds a Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur, India.
A researcher, entrepreneur, and teacher, he has founded and directed Artificial Intelligence and Visual Information Systems Labs at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the University of California, San Diego. Also, as Chairman of ACM SIG Multimedia, Jain has served as the founding Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Multimedia magazine and has served on the editorial boards of several magazines. He has been elected Fellow of ACM, IEEE, IAPR, AAAI, and SPIE. He has published over 250 research papers in scientific journals and conferences.
Jain has served as a Bren Professor in Information & Computer Sciences, Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, University of California, Irvine. His latest research focused on "Experiential Computing" — see Communications of ACM, July, 2003, pp. 48–55. Other companies he founded included PRAJA Inc., ImageWare Inc., solutions for surface modeling and reverse engineering, and SEraja Technologies Pvt. Ltd.
