Description

Co-founder of Wikipedia, Wales is an American Internet entrepreneur who has helped transform how the world accesses information.

Wales was born on August 7, 1966, in Huntsville, Alabama. He grew up in a small school run by his mother and grandmother, where he developed an early love of books and encyclopedias. This upbringing sparked a lifelong fascination with the idea of freely sharing knowledge. He attended Randolph School, a university-preparatory school in Huntsville, before going on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Finance from Auburn University. He then pursued graduate studies at the University of Alabama, followed by doctoral work at Indiana University, though he left without completing his doctorate.

Wales moved to Chicago in the early 1990s and worked as a futures and options trader at Chicago Options Associates. During this period, he began exploring the possibilities of the early Internet and became increasingly interested in its potential as a platform for information exchange. In 1996, he co-founded Bomis, an Internet company that hosted user-generated content and helped fund his later encyclopedia projects. Bomis focused primarily on a web portal and search engine, and its revenue eventually supported the launch of Nupedia, a free online encyclopedia that relied on expert contributors following a rigorous peer-review process.

Nupedia proved too slow to grow, so Wales, working alongside Larry Sanger, launched Wikipedia on January 15, 2001. The project adopted wiki technology, which allowed anyone to contribute and edit articles directly, dramatically accelerating content creation. Wikipedia quickly expanded to millions of articles in hundreds of languages, becoming one of the most visited websites in the world. Wales has often cited his philosophical influences, including Ayn Rand and Friedrich Hayek, as shaping his vision of a decentralized, volunteer-driven knowledge project. He has served as a board member of the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia, since its formation in 2003.

Beyond Wikipedia, Wales has been active in advocating for free and open access to information on a global scale. He co-founded Wikia (later renamed Fandom) in 2004, a for-profit wiki hosting platform that supports communities built around shared interests. In 2019, he launched WT:Social, a social media platform designed as a news-sharing network intended to counter the spread of misinformation. He has received numerous honors for his work, including the Dan David Prize and the Gottlieb Duttweiler Prize. He is sometimes called "the godfather of online collaborative knowledge" in recognition of his role in transforming how the world accesses information.

Wales has lived and worked across multiple countries, spending significant time in the United Kingdom, where he has engaged with policy discussions on Internet governance and digital rights. He married Kate Garvey in 2012, and the couple have settled in London. His advocacy extends to education technology, net neutrality, and the dangers of government censorship online. Wales continues to be a prominent voice in global conversations about the future of the Internet and the role of community-driven platforms in sustaining a free and informed society.
