First to propose the widely used stack method of expression evaluation, Bauer patented the pushdown stack in 1957, a contribution that proved foundational to modern computing. He contributed to the definition of Algol 60, one of the most influential programming languages in the history of computer science. Bauer initiated the landmark 1968 Software Engineering Conference in Garmisch, an event widely regarded as the moment the discipline of software engineering was formally established. He also established early computer science education in Germany, helping to shape the academic foundations of the field in his home country.
