One of the principal leaders in the field of human-computer interaction, Bederson has been recognized through his selection to the Association for Computing Machinery's CHI Academy, an honorary group of individuals who have made substantial contributions to this field.
He has served as an Associate Professor of Computer Science and, from 2000–2006, the Director of the Human-Computer Interaction Lab at the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. His work has focused on Information Visualization, Interaction Strategies, and Digital Libraries, as well as accessibility issues such as Voting System Usability.
He, along with Phil Resnik and Chris Callison-Burch (of Johns Hopkins), was awarded a Google Research Award for their project "Translate the World: A Unified Framework for Crowdsourcing Translation." Among his many publications are several contributions to the Children Digital Libraries.
Bederson holds three degrees in Computer Science. He received his undergraduate degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and his MS and PhD from New York University.
