The first woman to serve as Chairperson of the State Bank of India, Bhattacharya became chairperson and chief executive officer of Salesforce, India. In 2016, Forbes ranked her 25th on its list of the most powerful women in the world. She is also the only Indian corporate leader to appear on Fortune's list of the world's greatest leaders, ranked 26th.

In 2018, Harvard Business Review published an interview with her titled "Arundhati Bhattacharya: The Making of SBI's First Woman Chairperson." In January 2025, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Shri, the country's fourth-highest civilian award.
