Photoelectric Paper Tape Reader
Description

NEC originally used a mechanical paper tape reader for the NEAC-1101 and other machines, but read speed was a slow 600 characters per minute (10 characters/second), so they developed a high-speed reader using photoelectric elements. Machines like the NEAC-2201 (completed in September 1958) were equipped with a 200-character-per-second photoelectric paper tape reader.
