NEAC-2205

In April 1961, NEC announced the NEAC-2205 transistor-based computer. This machine was built based on the technology of the NEAC-2203, and was designed for greater compactness and lower cost. More specifically, it was a general-purpose digital computer designed for small- and medium-scale business data processing. For main memory, it used a magnetic drum with a capacity of 3,000 words. Access time was long (12 miliseconds), but a loop memory track was provided to compensate for this. Transistors and diodes were used for circuitry throughout the system, and this was useful in reducing power consumption, achieving greater compactness and simplifying maintenance. Small and mid-size firms were the primary target users, but at the time such firms could not afford to adopt computers yet, and the system attracted little notice.
