This was the first model in Fujitsu's FACOM M Series of general-purpose computer. It was an ultra-large machine which occupied the top-end of the large FACOM M-100 Series, which was developed with subsidies from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, and announced in November 1974 (see Specifications of the Large FACOM M-100 Series). At the Japan Electronic Computer Show held in November 1975 (one year later), the various companies displayed the results of their development based on subsidies, but this computer attracted special attention as an LSI computer due to its high level of performance and compactness. Later, its superior performance was recognized by the world, and it built the foundation for the success of the FACOM M Series.
